ITs been so long since i was on a proper boat that when i heard Hernadez’ title of “Quartermaster” I was thinking the german army root of the title (Master of Quarters and Lodging) which is the S-4.
OOPS
Here at least it means the “Master of the Quarter Deck” An ancient french naval position indication the guy in charge of pointing the boat in the direction the captain wants it to go.
(whats a quarter deck? its an extra deck (usually a quarter of the length of the whole ship, hence the name)
placed on top of the Main deck (that runs the whole length of the ship) And it is where all the steering mechanisms are.
Its also the place where officers of many types usually are found because they can see where they are going and oversee the rest of the crew doing its thing.
And in many traditions it became the Officer Country. where basic crew were only allowed if they had a very specific job to do right then on the quarter deck.
As opposed to an extra deck on the front part of the boat. Which is called the Forecastle. (short for Forward Castle) that is where anchors and their chains get stored. (sometimes special sails too) And in many traditions is where the Chief of the Boat (Highest Ranking non-commisioned Officer) hangs out overseeing the rest of the crew. When he isnt specifically addressing an issue that needs correction.
